Which Katie Holmes Hairstyle is the Least Bad?

August 18th, 2009 8:38 AM by Free Britney Tags: Katie Holmes, Celebrity Hairstyles
Any fan of Hollywood gossip and style knows that are plenty of amazing, beautiful celebrity hairstyles out there that commoners wish they could emulate.

Katie Holmes does not have one of those hairstyles.

The actress famously cut her beautiful, long hair into a Victoria Beckham-esque bob with straight bangs in 2008, only to grow it back out in early 2009.

Either way, all we can say is ick.

Neither one really does it for us, but Tom Cruise seems to approve of her, so that's nice. Which of these Katie hairstyles is the least bad?

Rihanna's New Hair: 'Do or Don't?
October 21st, 2009 7:01 AM by Free Britney Filed under: Rihanna, Celebrity Hairstyles
Rihanna is known for style moves that most of us could never pull off, but she manages to because her sense of fashion and hairstyles are just that unique.

This newest hair affair of hers, however? Iffy.

We're not sure what she's going for here. Should she keep it? Does it just kind of work because it's her? Does it make you want to play "Russian Roulette"?

Paris fashion frenzy

Haute Couture means the Highest Fashion
With as many as four major show weeks per year, Paris claims the status of the capital of fashion. In Paris, the fashion design industry is booming. From June 28 - July 5, Paris is whipped into a fashion frenzy for the S/S 08 Menswear and Haute couture collections. While runway shows may appear to be mere theatrical performances, they are also formidable money-spinners.
The use of the term haute couture is strictly controlled, and the list of fashion establishments allowed to call their lines "haute couture" is regulated annually by a special ministerial decree. While there were several hundred haute couture establishments in France in the 1950s, today just 10 fashion houses in the country meet the criteria, which include hand-tailoring and personalized measurements. These elite establishments are members of a professional haute couture society that organises two annual fashion events, in January and July. Haute couture is only for women.

Fall 2009 Fashion Week Highlights

Get noticed with this oversized houndstooth coat from Preen. It's a great way to top all of the season's black looks.

Teal is just about the perfect color and looks delicious on almost everyone (including guys -- it's also showing up in menswear). Love the hood (drama!) and drawstring touches for a sporty chic look.

This elegant, embellished sleeve coat from Thuy would be perfect over a cocktail dress on cool evenings. Very retro, but timeless.

Build brands, not a house of cards

Pakistan's fashion revolution has shifted into second gear, evident by the increasing number of designer stores mushrooming all across the cities. Stalwarts like Amir Adnan, HSY, Maheen, Sonya Battla, Deepak Perwani and Karma have enjoyed retail presence for a long time; but now, even designers like Nomi Ansari, Sara Shahid, Saman Arif (Nayna) and Zara Shahjahan who have been eyeing the market skeptically, are throwing caution to the wind.

They have realized that the numbers are getting big and the money game bigger. And now when the industry has decided to shake off the stigma of made-to-order bridals, it's time to dive into the mass market head-on and prepare to invest in inexpensive ready to wear, made available in retail aisles of mass market stores. It's the need of the hour and that should become the order of the day.

Ethnic Embroideries

No more are men slave to the three-piece-look. Heightened consciousness about menswear, ramp shows being a major contributor towards it, has led to a complete makeover in the fashion-savvy urban man's wardrobe. Men are discovering their true style statement by going back to their cultural roots - the traditional sherwanis, jodhpuris and elaborately embroidered kurta pajamas. Men are asking for embroidered kurtas teamed with faded jeans for the perfect bohemian look. This season it's a plethora of colour that has touched the kurta. Bright colours have made their way on shelves that stock the classic men's wear

A desert experience on canvas

A paintings exhibition ‘Desert Breeze’ by Ali Abbas opened at the Ejaz Art Gallery on Friday.

The work is figurative and focuses on the effects of a desert on the lives of its inhabitants. Wind, the part and parcel of a desert, has been portrayed skilfully to highlight various effects it leaves on people. The cultural life of Sindh is brought before art lovers through the portrayal of Sindhi women dressed in traditional clothing.

One of the paintings, in which a woman is feeding her baby while a man sits beside her, gives a glimpse of gypsy culture. The colours used in the painting go well with its theme and add to the art piece’s aesthetic value.

In another painting, a woman is portrayed standing along with her children and a pitcher.

It suggests that the woman is on her way to bring drinking water for her family – a common practice in most of Sindh’s desert areas – but is stopped by the fierce wind. The painting matches the title of the exhibition, as the wind’s affect is exceedingly visible in it. The painting also speaks volumes about the difficulties that desert inhabitants encounter daily. It depicts how hardworking those women are, who fight for their survival in deserts and work side by side with their men.

Done in the watercolour medium, the work shows the maintenance of strokes in a nice fashion. Paper has been used as a base, and the work seems like a series of events, revolving around a specific theme. Zobaria, an art enthusiast, said the work provided the viewer a glimpse into desert life. “The work is nice, but the artist could have intensified the wind-effect in some of the paintings, showing the clothes of the figures blowing.”

Abbas earned a master’s degree in fine arts from Sindh University and has exhibited his work across the country.

Paris in New Role

LiLo floats into Paris in new role – as fashion adviser
Ungaro's collection, created with the help of Lindsay Lohan, could make or break couture house

Many words have been used to describe the actress Lindsay Lohan: alcohol-abuser, self-destructive, bad girl. Designer, however, is not one of them.

Nevertheless, today at the Paris Fashion Show, still regarded as one of the premier showcases for the world's couture houses, that is precisely how she will be styling herself. LiLo has been twittering about her latest venture as "creative adviser" to no less a fashion giant than Emanuel Ungaro, one of France's most sophisticated clothes firms.

The fashion world was stunned when Ungaro announced last month that Lohan would be its new creative adviser, working with the little-known Spanish designer Estrella Archs.

Lohan, 23, star of Herbie Fully Loaded, Freaky Friday and Mean Girls, is better known for her revolutions through rehab clinics and a drink-driving arrest, as well as her relationship with DJ Samantha Ronson, than for any design ability.

But her collection could make or break the house, which has seen its fortunes decline since Ungaro retired in 2004. If it is ill-received it could permanently damage the house's sophisticated reputation.

Inevitably, there is scepticism about how much work Lohan has put into the creations. Archs studied at London's Central St Martin's, with a stint at Prada and Nina Ricci before starting her own small house.

Lohan has been pictured doing a lot of partying in Paris this week and inviting her celebrity friends, such as Miley Cyrus and Lily Allen, to "her" fashion show via Twitter.

The designs are described as bold and bright, with pink and orange colours, sequins and leather tailoring.

It is a high-risk strategy for the haute couture house. Whereas famous names such as Kate Moss and Kylie Minogue have "inspired" or put their names to designs in the past, it's been for high street chains such as Topshop and H&M, rather than a high-end couture house.

"This is the real me," Lohan said yesterday. "Working with Estrella and the team at Ungaro is a dream come true. Fashion is one of my favourite things in the world and this is the best week of my life. I'm just so excited; it has hardly hit me yet."

The British designer Zandra Rhodes said that using celebrity was part of the business today.

"We're in a period now where celebrities, whether they are muses or anything else, are going to sell," she said. "There was a time when it was the models on the catwalk, now its footballers' wives or actresses. It's a phenomenon that does not relate to the product.

"The test is whether people look at the clothes and say I must wear that. If they do, then it works; if they don't, then it won't sell.

"You could say that Vivienne Westwood's punk clothing was driven by the Sex Pistols, rather than the other way round."

The Dutch design duo Viktor and Rolf called on the singer Rosin Murphy to sing live yesterday during their show, continuing their penchant for live accompaniment – in the past Tori Amos and Rufus Wainwright have helped out.

Viktor and Rolf, whose last two collections received a muted response from the world's fashion press, pulled off a return to form, with elaborate frills and big-shaped dresses cut and shredded – just about getting right their tussle between the theatrical and commercial.

"There's a certain aggression to it, to the act of cutting, and we like that because that way it becomes contemporary," they said. "We didn't just want to create plain ball gowns."

Make Your Personality Shine

Do you gather attention of the listeners when you speak? How effective are you in your dialogue? Do you have the communication skills in you?

These are the questions that are needed to be answered if you want yourself to be heard and appreciated among the crowd. Communication skills lets you gather attention of the listeners whenever you speak. Communication skills affect your interpersonal relationships with others and the response you get from them.

Here are 6 skills that groom your personality and make you impressive whenever you speak.

Communication skill 1: SOUND MORE INTELLIGENT

Speak just a bit slower to allow yourself to select your most appropriate vocabulary and to give the impression of thoughtfulness. Deliberately pause at key points - this has the effect of emphasizing the importance of a particular point you are making.

Communication skill 2: SOUND MORE POWERFUL

Speak clearly. Do not shout or whisper. Use short, simple declarative sentences. You say what you mean and you mean what you say. Cut out any useless connectors, adjectives and adverbs, especially superlatives.

Communication skill 3: SOUND MORE POLISHED

Never answer a question with a blunt 'yes' or 'no.' Append a short phrase of clarification. For example, "No, I did not see it." "Yes, I know sir?"

Communication skill 4: SOUND MORE ARTICULATE

Make a special effort to pronounce the final sound in a word and use its energy to carry over to the following word. People will judge your competency through your vocabulary. If you are not sure how to say a word, don’t use it, which will pull down your communication skill instead of boosting it up.

Communication skill 5: SOUND MORE CONFIDENT

Carry your body up. Hold your head as if you had a crown on it. Do not let your arms and legs have side-to-side motion when you move. Keep your elbows and knees close to the midline of your body. Your body movements express what your attitudes and thoughts really are, controlling them adds to your communication skill.

Communication skill 6: SOUND MORE POLITE

Always remember to greet the listener before starting a conversation or making an oral presentation. Tell the audience what you are going to tell them.
At the end, summarize what you have told them.

Communication skill 7: SOUND MORE TOUCHY

Try to judge how your listeners are more comfortable taking information from you and make sure you feed them in the same way as the want. Many people are best at absorbing information they get through their eyes, others need hands on experience to set the message in their heads most effectively.

As with most personal skills, communication skills cannot be taught. One can only point the way. So as always, practice is essential, to improve your skills generally and make it your best each time you speak. Let your personality shine!

Mehndi

How did you become interested in henna tattoos?
I became interested in henna tattoo by accident. I was helping a young women who was looking for an interesting way to make some summer money. She was not sure what she wanted to do, but knew that she liked to doodle.
Browsing at a local metaphysical shop, I found a henna kit that included a book, some designs & henna ingredients. I bought it for her and we set about experimenting with henna tattoo. The paste was wonderfully fragrant, the designs were fun... the process was captivating and the result was just wonderful.
As an "alchemist" of sorts, I became interested in the discovery of a recipe for the perfect paste. To test the paste, I had to do henna tattoos and the more I tattooed, the more I had to learn, the more fun I had, the more satisfied my clients were and there you have it.

Do people always use traditional designs for Mehndi or can they create their own?
I can only speak from my experience as an American henna artist. I offer my clients a choice of traditional henna designs, original designs and of course invite them to create their own. It is my experience that Americans prefer simple tattoo designs. As well, very few choose a full palm design. Most choose a tattoo design for their wrist, ankle or belly. Many choose back of the hand patterns, and some choose a henna tattoo for the foot.

What’s in your henna paste recipe?
Paste recipe's vary..... as a rule my paste includes fresh ground & sifted henna from Yemen, lemon juice, essential oils and a spiced "henna tea".
What’s the most elaborate tattoo you’ve ever applied and how long did it take to create?
The most elaborate tattoos I have done are full palm and full back of the hand tattoos. While I would love the opportunity to do full bridal mehndi, I have not yet had anyone order is. Full hand tattoos take about an hour to an hour an a half. Time is dependant on the willingness of the client to sit still.

Is the Mehndi culture different from the permanent-ink tattoo culture?
Apparently. I do not have much experience with being a part of either culture... however it is my experience that people who have permanent tattoos often are not interested in henna tattoo as they have a "real one."
People who choose henna are delighted by the flexibility mehndi provides as well as the unique color of the finished design.
Further, the henna paste by it's nature will not produce the same effect as permanent tattoo, so the style of art is different.
